Afternoon Tea at Prested Hall

Prested Hall in Colchester Essex is an elegant, yet homely 15th century Manor House set at the end of a long and impressive driveway. It is a wedding venue, boutique hotel and spa, set amongst gorgeous grounds overlooking a lake. It makes for a glamourous afternoon tea setting and is featured on our list of ‘The Best Afternoon Teas in Essex’. The afternoon tea at Prested Hall can be served in one of their stunning reception rooms or alfresco, both overlooking the beautiful grounds.

The afternoon tea at Prested Hall is seasonal, so the menu changes throughout the year and is available online. Served on a traditional cake stand upon crisp white linen tablecloths with tea served in their renowned glass teapots. There are over a dozen different leaf teas to choose from. You also have the option of coffee with your afternoon tea. They offer either their ‘Traditional Afternoon Tea or a savoury version, their ‘Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea’. I have had the pleasure of sampling them both and they are equally delicious.

Traditional Afternoon Tea

The traditional afternoon tea at Prested Hall is very impressive. The finger sandwich fillings are always interesting and more unusual than your regular traditional afternoon tea. This is one of the reasons I enjoy their afternoon tea so much. They are generously filled and served on a mix of fresh bread and mini rolls.

The scones at Prested Hall are some of the best I have tasted. Lightly spiced and served warm with a choice of jams and clotted cream, they are a real delight. The scones are accompanied by a lovely selection of mini cakes and cheesecake. Again, these are freshly baked and are an interesting array of flavours, for example; an orange & Cointreau cupcake or the dark chocolate & raspberry tart.

Savoury Afternoon Tea

The Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea at Prested Hall is perfect for any savoury lovers out there. You get to enjoy the traditional experience of an afternoon tea but with a savoury twist.

In the same format as a traditional afternoon tea, you receive a cake stand filled with savoury treats. The first tier is filled with freshly made finger sandwiches and mini rolls, again these are always interesting and unusual flavours at Prested Hall. A couple of my favourites were the Roast Pork & Apple Sauce finger sandwich and the Chicken & Smoked Bacon Mayonnaise roll.

On the second tier you receive a warm freshly baked cheese scone with butter and Tiptree onion relish. Finally the third tier is filled with a Chorizo sausage roll, minted lamb kofta, steak & mushroom parcel and a Cheddar & onion quiche. The pastries on the third tier were served warm and were simply amazing. The slow braised steak and mushroom parcel was my favourite, closely followed by the Pork & Chorizo Sausage Roll. They were both very, very good. It was a large portion and we didn’t manage to finish it all.
