KD Theatre’s Alice in Wonderland
We were invited along to KD Theatre’s Alice in Wonderland Open Theatre performance at Harlow Museum and Gardens in Essex. What a fabulous venue this was! I haven’t been to an outdoor air production before and thought this was a perfect way to see Alice in Wonderland. Their show is running from 21st July 2022 to 22nd August 2022 across various open air venues.
Harlow Museum and Gardens in Essex is a lovely walled garden with pretty hedge rows and flowers and a lawn perfect for setting up our picnic blanket for the show. They couldn’t have been more warm and welcoming, it was a lovely venue.

The Show
Everybody knows and loves the story of Alice in Wonderland. Curious young Alice is transported to Wonderland via a rabbit hole. Our journey started with Alice chasing after the white rabbit who was in quite a rush…. she of course drank a drink and shrunk down small and then ate a cake that made her grow.
We met all the weird and wonderful characters along the way. The ‘Caucus Race’ was a funny affair. We loved the Mad Hatter and the Queens guards, their song ‘Don’t smell the roses’ got stuck in our heads for quite some time. We had fun at the Tea Party with the Mad Hatter and playing croquet with the Queen, luckily we didn’t lose our heads! The show was really charming, full of amazing singing, dancing and sparkling costumes.
The Cast
The cast were fantastic, many of them transforming into several characters during the show. The acting, singing and dancing was just brilliant from all. They performed some really beautiful songs and then some more funny comedy numbers! Alice had such a wonderful voice and she dazzled in her sparkly blue dress. The costumes looked great and were really cleverly put together. They must have been difficult to wear on a hot day. That did not deter the cast however, they carried on regardless delivering a fantastic performance.
We loved meeting the queen’s guards during the interval (checking we hadn’t stolen the queen’s jam tarts!). They did not drop out of character once. It is always nice for some audience interaction, the kids love it!
We absolutely loved every minute of Alice in Wonderland. It was a really professional show, very cleverly done in a relaxed open air setting. The songs, characters and dancing made this completely charming to watch. This was an all round great open air production and I have no problems recommending this for some great family fun! Our kids really enjoyed it, us adults too!
