Afternoon Tea at Downham Hall

Downham Hall

We visited the beautiful Downham Hall in Downham. It is located in a tranquil spot between Billericay and Wickford in Essex. A family run boutique country house hotel and wedding venue, nestled in the Essex countryside with views across the rolling fields. Downham Hall offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as their Afternoon Tea, which runs from 12pm to 3pm, Monday to Saturday.

Downham Hall is the perfect place for an Afternoon Tea in Billericay, Essex. Served in their Orangery or the Du Beauvoir Suite means you get stunning views whilst you eat. The Orangery in particular is an incredibly light and pretty room! They have a super talented pastry chef and everything is freshly baked in house with regular seasonal updates.

What is included at the Afternoon Tea at Downham Hall in Billericay, Essex:

The afternoon tea at Downham Hall is presented on a traditional three tier stand, they offer a selection of delicate finger sandwiches, a plain and fruit scone served with cornish clotted cream and tiptree jam. Their talented in-house pastry chef regularly updates the cake selection depending on season.

They have a great selection of tea sourced from Camellia’s Tea House. You can choose from classic loose leaf teas such as English Breakfast to China Gunpowder, Rooibos Orange and Cactus tea or White Apricot to name but a few.

The Savouries

The savouries aren’t your typical selection. Alongside classic sandwiches, we had a vol-au-vent, a soft milk roll filled with egg mayo, a salmon and avocado wrap and even a mini Cornish pasty, which made it feel that bit different. I also love to see Coronation chicken in a sandwich line up!

The Sweet Stuff

The scones at Downham Hall are lovely, you receive one fruit and one plain, served warm with Cornish clotted cream and Tiptree Strawberry Jam. They had a good crusty top and soft, moist centre. They were faultless. Served with plenty of clotted cream and jam.

The sweet selection is where this one really stands out. The passion fruit and mango posset was smooth and full of flavour, and the macarons were some of the best I’ve had at an afternoon tea. Alongside a mini Victoria sponge and fruit tartlet, everything felt beautifully done. They have a super talented pastry chef and it is a 2 AA Rosette kitchen, and it shows.

Your afternoon tea is accompanied by unlimited tea or coffee.

The afternoon tea was perfect portion wise and it was a really lovely experience in a stunning location. I will certainly visit again. It is easy to see why it features on our list of The Best Afternoon Teas in Essex.
